live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.

be an interesting week ahead. president obama is in henderson nevada where he's practicing for the next couple of days. both the president and mitt romney's camps are trying to lower expectations so that if someone does particularly well, it will be an apparent surprise. we heard over the weekend that mitt romney is working on some hard-hitting one-liners because he has that well-timed sense of humor thing. here's the president in response to that news. >> i know folks in the media are speculating already on who's going to have the best zingers. governor romney is a good debater. >> not so sure if he's a good zinger. the presidential last debate was back in 2008. he and mitt romney have never gone head to head. romney does need a win to make this a game changer. the match-up will be wednesday night in denver and of course, we know that you'll be tuned in right here to current tv tv for all of our pre and post-debate coverage. 83% of respondents to a new abc news poll said they're interested in the debates as well. so yo

's look at these numbers. president obama still comfortably ahead. in fact, he's picked up a point. he's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the

whenever someone becomes president just because the left is unhappy with obama in many respects because he would see what happens on the space opposition. if obama wins the second term that is going to be the interesting question my optimistic view of history is different from jessica. we have been missed partisan and defied and gridlocked many times throughout our history. many times people were buried and said democrat and republican on the tombstone. the newspapers or democratic present republican newspapers. i know you remember the tariffs dispute very well, but there was tremendous gridlock and it took decades to get devotee and the way the american system work is almost designed to create this. i wish i could say that there was this functionality but i'm afraid it is almost designed to create this just when you think that it is about to blow, sometimes although not all the time we had a civil war because we couldn't solve these problems but some -- often there is a coming together and i actually am optimistic the we will cease and dealing with these issues. >> i think we may also hav

these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conserve-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conserve-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. don't worry. not only has conserve-a-pedia been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actually still here. dinosaurs have been seen in papua, new guinea, twice since 1990. so says conserve-a-pedia. see, if you don't like the real world, invent your own. you know it is not
